How do you embed a culture of Innovation?
This is a question that is being constantly asked by companies and there isn’t one straight answer. In truth, embedding an innovation culture within an organisation is the result of a combination of factors:
- allowing people time and freedom to innovate;
- providing the right risk/reward environment to stimulate new thinking;
- supporting the development of a growth mindset;
- unleashing creativity in others; and
- training and supporting people in innovation as a taught discipline
The last factor – innovation training - requires structure, planning and competence. Benchmarking an organisation’s capability to develop innovative people, through either internal innovation initiatives and programmes or graduate development schemes, ensures that these activities and interventions deliver impact and value, and align more closely to the strategic goals of the business.
The IKE Institute, as the UK’s professional body for innovators, offers a robust accreditation framework (Figure 1) – IKE Institute’s Certified Innovation Programme® (CIP) - that assesses, recognizes and certifies an organisation’s innovation training and development capability.
This framework helps to give organisations’ a way to structure and assess innovation programmes and graduate development schemes. All six certification categories in the framework are delivered in accordance to international standards, as defined by the ISO 56002 Innovation Management System Guidance Standard (2019).
Outputs from the CIP include informed planning to balance resources, maximise innovation training results, and gain greater clarity on how to build innovative capability in people. The CIP programme provides a Recommendations Report identifying areas of strengths and weaknesses and expert recommendations on how to improve innovation programmes and graduate development schemes.
