This event will focus on requirements for nuclear, but as will be understood from the experts at the event, the skills are those required for many other large UK projects.

This Masterclass is being made available by City & Guilds as a CPD event for teachers and lecturers of the C&G Engineering Techbac and Construction for the Built Environment Techbac. Please advise NEF if you are a C&G Techbac provider.

This session is ideal for:

  • Curriculum leaders in construction, engineering and IT
  • Lecturers and Lead Teachers in Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Maths

About the event

For this Masterclass we will be visiting the EDF Energy Nuclear Power Station at Heysham, Lancashire. Heysham is the only site in the UK to have 2 operating nuclear power stations. Each station houses two advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) type. (http://www.edfenergy.com/energy/power-stations/heysham-1 and http://www.edfenergy.com/energy/power-stations/heysham-2). The day will include a long tour of the facility with a chance to ask many questions about the technology, policy and the construction of the old and new facilities.

This session will provide a unique industry insight for delegates, helping them to understand the challenges and opportunities for FE education providers in helping to address the significant skills gap facing the industry.  Speakers will also cover some of the new technologies and sustainability issues in construction. Delegates will learn about the important part nuclear generation will play in the UK’s sustainable energy future.  The afternoon session will conclude with a guided tour of Heysham 2 plant.

Speakers from EDF Energy Tier 1 suppliers will also contribute to the day and will highlight new technologies and sustainability issues in construction of new infrastructure. EDF Energy are keen to highlight the “skills gap” as a major and long-term issue for the UK.

About the host:

EDF Energy is one of the UK’s largest energy companies and its largest producer of low-carbon electricity. We generate around one fifth of the UK's electricity and employ around 15,000 people, and we supply electricity and gas to around 5.5 million residential and business customers, making us the biggest supplier of electricity by volume.

EDF Energy is leading the way in nuclear power generation, which will play a key role in the UK’s energy mix: helping to address climate change while ensuring a secure and affordable energy supply.  With its, partners EDF Energy has advanced plans to build two new reactors at Hinkley Point B in Somerset. The Hinkley Point New Nuclear Development will create a new generation of skilled engineers, thousands of job and business opportunities and provide a real boost to the economy of Somerset and the South West.

BENEFITS

  • Delegates will be given direct contact and link up to specialists nationally and internationally
  • The Masterclass carries 6 CPD points
  • Participants receive a NEF Certificate of Achievement
  • Masterclass participation can be used towards the professional registration of CPD with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
