Power Industry Training

Date: 26 March 2014 : 10:00 - 16:00

The Engineering Hub is the first purpose-built school of Engineering to be created in the UK for more than 20 years and is located on the University’s Brayford campus, right in Lincoln city centre.

The UK, in common with many of its European partners cannot get enough engineering graduates from engineering degrees. It is estimated that the Power Industry sector alone will need up to 34,000 new graduates, and ‘green engineering’ sectors, including wind power, between 50,000 and 70,000. This helps explain the rationale behind the new engineering school - namely to create the engineers of the future.

Siemens have co-located their product training facility in custom designed locations within the Hub. This has cemented links between Siemens and the University of Lincoln for both teaching and research in many fields of Engineering.

The collaboration between the University of Lincoln and Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd has been commended by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). It was one of only five projects shortlisted for the Team award at their recent Innovation Awards which celebrated the products, technologies and processes that lead the way in engineering innovation.

This Masterclass will offer you a chance to see the new Engineering Hub at Lincoln University and the training centre for Siemens. Facilities on show includes power engineering technology such as large industrial gas 5-15MW turbines and advanced manufacturing equipment including 3-D printing and laser machinery. Innovative engagement and teaching methods will also be covered, including how to support learners with skill gaps in mathematics and the work of Sustain, the university’s employer group.

Who is this masterclass suitable for?

The session is ideal for:

  • Curriculum leaders in engineering, particularly mechanical engineering, power engineering, electrical & electronics, sustainable energy and technologies
  • Lecturers and assessors in engineering, including mechanical/auto/manufacturing and should also be of interest to teachers of physics, and specialists in turbomachinery
  • It will also be of interest to business development directors looking to understand the engineering sector and requirements for apprenticeships and training

About the Host

The Engineering Hub at Lincoln University (www.lincoln.ac.uk)  is the first purpose-built school of Engineering to be created in the UK for more than 20 years and is located on the University’s Brayford campus, right in Lincoln city centre.

The equipment throughout the Hub is at the cutting edge technology, and the offers on power and energy engineering offers fundamental skills and knowledge to underpin students’ engineering careers.  The new building is fitted out with state-of the art academic spaces including lecture theatres, seminar rooms, teaching and project laboratories, alongside industrial engine and gas turbine testing facilities. Housing specialised research facilities and research-active staff, the Engineering Hub is not only highly functional, but embodies a vision shared by a forward-thinking university and a world-leading business.

The Engineering Hub was completed and ready for business in August 2011 and officially opened by the Princess Royal, patron of Women into Science, Engineering and Construction, in January 2012. It is the result of a long standing collaborative effort between the University of Lincoln and  Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery.
